Want to convert a song into a karaoke track? Have some music you would like to sing to rather than listen to? This tutorial is going to show you how to do exactly that!
Whatever the popular opinion of karaoke, it is still huge and is a guilty secret of more people that you could ever imagine. Travel to somewhere like Japan and it is a way of life with a fanatical following. Tokyo has hundreds of karaoke bars that are full of people every night. Here in the west, karaoke is still big and all of us have been to a karaoke bar at least once or twice. The braver among us have even sung in one.
If you’re into karaoke, you can buy CDs, DVDs or digital media prepared specially. The vocals have been removed and subtitled lyrics accompany the file so you can play it on a karaoke machine. You can also make your own for free with nothing but a superb free audio program and a little effort.
I use Audacity for all my audio needs. It creates ringtones, soundtracks for videos and it can convert a song into a karaoke track too.
As usual, we have to tell you to be careful when using commercial music to create a karaoke track. There are all sorts of licensing and copyright issues you may come across if you modify a commercial song. Be careful out there!
Convert a song into a karaoke track with Audacity
Audacity is a free audio program for Windows that has been around forever. It is very powerful and has many of the features other products costing hundreds of dollars have, for no money down. You will need to download and install a LAME MP3 Encoder in order to create your karaoke track, but that’s free too.
- Download and install Audacity.
- Download and install the LAME MP3 Encoder.
- Open Audacity and you will be presented with the main screen.
- Select the song you want to convert and drag it into that screen.
- Select the small black down arrow to the left of the waveform screen.
- Select Split stereo track.
- Select one of the two waveforms. The other should turn light gray. The waveform is the blue audio display in the center.
- Select Effects from the top menu.
- Select Invert.
- Select the small black arrow next to each waveform and select Mono.
- Select File from the top menu and Export Audio.
- Select MP3 as the file format and save it somewhere.
You now have a song that has been converted to a karaoke track. What you have done is split a stereo track into two halves. We have then inverted the vocal on one side so it cancels out the other side. Changing the audio to mono further cancels it out so the lyrics are mostly inaudible. It isn’t perfect but for a free solution, it is good enough for most karaoke sessions.
If you’re going full bore into karaoke then you may prefer to use a premium audio program. For the rest of us, Audacity should be plenty enough.
Adding lyrics to your karaoke track
The eagle-eyed amongst you will probably noticed we have only done half the job. We have removed vocals from a song but we don’t yet have any lyrics. Adding those is a little more problematic. If you have iTunes or premium audio program you can use MP3 tagging to add lyrics. If you’re using Audacity you don’t have that option but there is always a way. This way uses VLC and a neat plugin called MiniLyrics.
- Download the MiniLyrics app from the website.
- Open VLC and select Tools and Preferences.
- Select Interface and Control interfaces in the left menu.
- Check the box next to MiniLyrics – auto display lyrics for current playing song.
- Select Save.
- Restart VLC.
- Play your karaoke track in VLC and the lyrics should appear automatically.
MiniLyrics is a cool little app that will search and download lyrics automatically. It doesn’t have access to every song but its database is huge. It isn’t the only lyrics app out there but it is one I tried and it works.
If you want to use lyrics manually, you can of course. Navigate to the MetroLyrics website or alternative lyrics website. Find your song and download the lyric file for it. You can then print the lyrics or have them on screen for you to use. They won’t be synchronized like with MiniLyrics but still works.
